STUDIO
The physical arraingment at ConwaySound is a very high functioning recording space, featuring things rarely seen in affordable recording studios. The live room has 6 28 sq/ft 23 well quadratic residue diffusers, and 9 auralex t-fusers, no parrallel surfaces (including the cieling, acoustically speaking), a floated wood floor, and over 1500lbs of bass trapping. Where the rubber meets the road in studio design is when the foam gets replaced with diffusers and bass traps. These things allow for much greater sonic consistancy within the space, and by opening up the session to the myriad of sounds available via ambience microphones, not only can we avoid having to use digital reverb, but it makes the recording process faster, better and more fun for everyone. Instead of tuning knobs on virtual software plugins, we are swapping out different mics and moving them to different locations. Attaing excelent sounds during tracking insures that records can be mixed quickly, with little need to try to fix problems that can never truely be fixed.
Rather it's tracking drums, guitar and bass cabs, doing gang vocals, acoustic instruments or stomping and clapping, a great live room is not only the foundation for a great record, it is also the first few floors of the building. Thousands of hours of research and empirical tests were conducted to concieve of the plan and realize it. Small live rooms are very difficult and have many issues that must be carefully addressed, and in this design no detail was overlooked. The studio offers great sight lines, a nice veriety of different acoustic spaces, a place for people to hang out, and a vibe that is a perfect balance of comfort and professionalism.
